22I am writing to express my sincere gratitudeto the Gerald Choa Memorial Fund forawarding me this overseas scholarship, andto the donors of the Fund for their generoussupport of student activities. The scholarshipenabled me to embark on a three-weekelective in Singapore, at the NationalUniversity Cancer Institute (NCIS) under theNational University of Singapore, learningfrom academic oncologists in variousinpatient and outpatient settings. One thing that impressed me the most wasthe Institute%u2019s dedication to clinical trials, andthe close collaboration between cliniciansand bench scientists. At NCIS, not only weredrugs developed by multinationalpharmaceutical companies tested, but alsothose developed by local scientists at A*STAR,the Singaporean biomedical research lab.Gerald Choa Memorial Fund OverseasResearch Scholarship 2023/24CHAN Lok Hang, Brandon (Medicine Year 5)THANK YOU NOTESI had the opportunity to observe the early phase trial clinics, in which novel antibody-drugconjugates were used to help patients who have exhausted conventional treatment options, providing hope where it was much needed. Apart from exposure to clinical trials, I was alsoable to appreciate the practice of medicine in a true multi-cultural setting. The diversity ofSingapore is well-represented among both the staff and patients at NCIS. British doctors talkedto their patients in Singlish, and Chinese doctors conversed in Malay, a reflection of Singaporeas a melting pot of Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian cultures. With this elective, I learntabout the best practices that define a world-class cancer centre; practices that will undoubtedlyshape and guide my career in the future.22
