The name %u2014 Professor Gerald H. CHOA %u2014 issynonymous with the Faculty of Medicine ofThe Chinese University of Hong Kong. Hisformer students %u2014 many now holding highranking positions in the private and publicsectors %u2014 remember him fondly and say hehad a deeply %u201ccaring heart%u201d.But more importantly, the late ProfessorCHOA is remembered for beinginstrumental in setting up the Faculty ofMedicine in 1981, five years after he joinedCUHK. He was its Founding Dean and ChairProfessor of Administrative Medicine. Hewas Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the Universityfrom 1 March 1979 to 28 February 1981.Professor CHOA guided every aspect ofplanning for the Faculty of Medicine. Heestablished a teaching hospital %u2014 what wasto become the Prince of Wales Hospital;developed the curriculum and recruitedacademic and research staff. In 1986, heproudly witnessed the graduation of theFaculty%u2019s first batch of medical graduates.From then on, there was no stopping theFaculty from evolving into a worldrenowned teaching institute of medicine.Professor CHOA had great expectations ofCUHK%u2019s medical graduates %u2014 eliciting no lessthan a high degree of professionalcompetency from them and a commitmentto the highest ethical and moral standards.Professor CHOA received his MBBS and MDdegrees from The University of Hong Kong,and was a Fellow of the Royal College ofPhysicians of London (FRCP London), aFellow of the Royal College of Physicians ofEdinburgh (FRCP Edinburgh) and a Fellow ofthe Faculty of Community Medicine (FFCM).Gerald Choa Memorial FundTo ensure that Professor Gerald CHOA%u2019srich legacy lives on, the Gerald ChoaMemorial Fund was established in 2013,with the following objectives:To honour his achievementsTo cultivate a %u201csupport-by-giving%u201dculture among our graduatesTo strengthen our heritage and tofoster close ties between alumni andmedical studentsTo support activities benefitting bothstudents and the community at largeProfessor Gerald H.
